Representative pushes for higher salary for public school teachers
Kusug Tausug partylist Representative Shernee A. Tan is pushing for the salary of public school teachers and non-teaching personnel in the elementary and secondary school levels to be updated from Salary Grade 11 to 18 and Salary Grade 1 to 9, respectively.
The House Bill 5524 (HB 5524) tasks the DepEd to issue the necessary rules and regulations into implementation of the proposed act. The amount needed for the implementation shall be charged against the appropriation of the Department of Education (DepEd) of the following year on its execution day.
Tan recalled that during the pre-martial law era, public school teachers were one of the highly respected professions in the government.
“They received very decent pay that they could afford to send their children to exclusive schools and could even build bigger houses. But, at the present time, the teaching profession has been associated with teachers selling tocinos, longganisas and other commodities to augment their incomes,” Rep. Tan recalls.
