Award-winning Filipino film “Foster Child” continues to rake awards and recognitions abroad seven years after it first appeared on the widescreen — this time in Thailand.
“Foster Child”, one of Brillante Mendoza’s masterpieces, will be screened in Bangkok on October 12, 2015 in a special film event to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC). Mendoza is a renowned Filipino film director who also wrote and directed a number of internationally acclaimed indie films.
The screening will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand (FCCT) at the penthouse floor of Maneeya Bldg in Chidlom with Mendoza gracing the event along with Dr. Aruna Vasudev, founder and president of the India-based NETPAC.
NETPAC is composed of well-known filmmakers, artists and critics, and others who serve on NETPAC juries at more than 40 film festivals around the world.
Admission is free for FCCT members while 150 baht will be charged for non-members.
Foster Child is a 104 – minute film which tells the story of Thelma (Cherry Pie Picache), together with her husband Dado (Dan Alvaro) and teenage sons Gerald (Alwyn Uytingco) and Yuri (Jiro Manio). They are urban poor family hired by a local foster care facility to provide temporary home and care to abandoned babies pending the latter’s formal adoption.
Thelma’s foster child John-John (Kier Segismundo) is to be turned over to his adoptive American parents. Every moment with the 3-year-old John-John becomes more precious as Thelma goes through the day fulfilling her motherly duties for the last time—bathing John-John, feeding him, and bringing him to school where the boy participates in a school presentation. The inevitable separation is heart-rending for the foster family.
Among Mendoza’s brilliant films are “Lola” which won the award for Best Film at the 6th Dubai International Film Festival in 2009; “Captive” which was shown in competition at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2012; and “Thy Womb” which competed for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival in 2012. It was in the film “Kinatay” where he won the Best Director at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009.
