DSWD Sec Taguiwalo visits women’s prison while in Bangkok

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy Taguiwalo visited Central Women Correctional Institution in Bangkok on Friday, March 31, 2017.

According to Sec. Taguiwalo, there are 24 Filipinas in the prison. The oldest is 62 years old while the youngest is 28. Meanwhile, 19 of the cases are drug related.

Taguiwalo is currently in Bangkok attending a conference. She also met some Filipino community leaders late afternoon yesterday.

She was accompanied by Vice Consul Jim Minglana, an Assistance to Nationals staff and an interpreter.

“ATM- visiting 24 Filipinas in Bangkok Women’s Correctional. All except two are already sentenced. 19 of the cases are drug related. The youngest is 28 years old and the oldest is 62. I was accompanied by Philippine Embassy in Thailand Vice Consul and staff in charge of Assistance to Filipino National and an interpreter. We were allowed to meet with the Filipinas and to have a dialogue with them, but picture taking is not allowed. They requested for assistance for medical and dental needs. They also asked for news back home. Shared with them the campaign against drugs and corruption by President Duterte. They asked news about show business. Musta na si Angel Locsin? Nanganak ba Paulynn Luna? Many are looking forward to the grant of amnesty which is usually given when the King and Queen mark their birthday. DSWD will assist those who will go back to the Philippines once they have served their sentence. #DSWDMayMalasakit ”
