According to Thai Public Health Ministry, 249 babies were born with Syphilis from January 1 to May 13, 2019. Data also showed that 3,080 were diagnosed with Syphilis, of these, 40.42% are 15-24 years old while 24.48% are 25-34 years old.
Public Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Sukhum Karnchanapimai said that these babies were infected because their mothers were infected.
“The number of syphilis patients is rising. The increase reflects that many teenagers and people in the reproductive age group have engaged in unsafe sex,” Dr. Sukhum added. Furthermore, he encouraged pregnant wife as well as the husband to take blood tests.
