Nearly 40 border officials in Songkla need to quarantine after arrest of Covid-19 positive migrant workers

About 40 officials have been quarantined after nine of a group of 14 illegal migrants from Myanmar caught in Sadao district were found to be infected with Covid-19.

The 14, including a child, were arrested by immigration police and administrative officials in a border area near Ban Rai Tok in tambon Samnak Kham, opposite Kedah State of Malaysia, on Saturday. They were waiting to be smuggled across the border to Malaysia

They were all tested for Covid-19. Nine of them were positive and were admitted to a hospital for treatment. The five others were given second tests. The results were not yet known.

As a result of the migrants being found infected, about 40 other people involved in their arrest and processing were quarantined and tested – police, soldiers and administrative officials.

Results for all 40 later came back negative but they would remain in 14-day quarantine, an official said.
