Supporters were quick to vote for President Duterte since the beginning of the poll where TIME asked its readers to rank the 100 personalities through a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ system. Among the top 5 of the 100 includes Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte earning 5% of the total ‘yes’ votes. Trailing behind him are Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Pope Francis, American billionaire and Microsoft empire mogul Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, all with 3%.
The TIME 100 list, however, is chosen by TIME’s editors but readers were given the opportunity to express and make the list themselves through online voting. Voting started March 24 and ended 11:59 of April 16, ET.
The Philippine president has been subject to criticisms for his intense war against drugs that allegedly killed more than 8,000 people, as reported by Reuters. He has earned the ire of Philippine Senator Leila Delima, Philippine Vice-President Leni Robredo and even international organization like the UN Human Rights Council has stepped in to make their stand on the issue on the so called “extra-judicial killings”.
Previous winners of TIME 100 were Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2015 and American Politician Bernie Sanders in 2016.
