UPDATE: Police said the gunman was apprehended at about 10.45am
Police said they are searching for a man who fired at least 40 shots in public close to Chulalongkorn University on Friday morning, Khaosod English reported.
Eyewitnesses said they heard the gunshots on Chula Soi 10 in Pathum Wan area. It is unclear whether anyone was wounded in the incident, which came just days after a mass shooting killed 29 victims in Korat. At least one witness said the gunman aimed his firearm at pedestrians at one point.
“At first he was shooting into the sky. He fired three shots. And then he aimed at my direction,” one witness said. “I could hear sound of metals clanging.”
Police cordoned off the alley of Chula Soi 10 as of publication after they suspect it was where the suspect was hiding. Members of the public were advised to steer clear while the operation is ongoing.
Police identified the gunman as Ekkachai Charueksilp, 44. He reportedly had an argument with his family before leaving his home with a handgun.
Erratum: The number of gunshots fired was at least 40, not 50 as earlier reported. Khaosod English, our source, also updated their news story.
