The Cabinet, during its meeting on 30 June 2020, approved the extension of the period of the enforcement of the Declaration of an Emergency Situation for one more month, from 1 to 31 July 2020.
The decision was made following a proposal by the Office of the National Security Council, which serves as the coordinating office of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
The Cabinet was told that CCSA held a meeting on 25 June to consider guidelines for containing the spread of COVID-19. The meeting agreed to propose to the Cabinet the extension of the emergency situation declaration.
As the global COVID-19 situation remains serious in many parts of the world, the extension is needed to enable officials to effectively contain the spread of the virus.
The enforcement of the emergency declaration will empower officials to order the quarantine of people and implement other measures, such as controlling travel in and out of the country and tracking suspected people.
Moreover, the Government has announced the fifth phase of easing restrictions on high-risk businesses and leisure activities, such as the reopening of pubs and bars, beginning on 1 July. Therefore, the extension of the period of the emergency situation declaration is necessary to prevent the risk of a second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak.
The COVID-19 situation in Thailand has improved; as of 30 June 2020, the country has gone 36 days without any local transmissions. The total number of infections in Thailand, as reported on 30 June, was 3,171. The number of deaths remained unchanged at 58.
