Digital Economy and Society Ministry to verify 700,000 foreign subscriber’s mobile numbers

Around 700,000 foreign subscribers will be undergoing verification before deciding whether to keep or terminate their mobile banking services in Thailand in June, said the minister of Digital Economy and Society (DES).

In a Bangkok Post, DES Minister Prasert Jantararuangthong said that since January 1, 2022, around 700,000 mobile phone numbers have been registered to foreign nationals, with over 1.8 million left unregistered.

The Thai government requires subscribers and mobile banking apps users to have identical names and registration details in efforts to stop online scams. This policy was introduced last February 1 with completions expected by April 30. Otherwise, mobile banking services will be terminated by June.

Banking apps subscribers who have yet to register will be contacted by their respective banks before April 30, while individuals who were not asked may continue to use their banking apps as usual, said Mr. Prasert.
