The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has ranked Bangkok as the 9th noisiest city in the world, having an average noise level at 99 decibels.
In a The Nation report, Bangkok’s ranking together with other South and Southeast Asian cities, highlights the global issue on noise pollution.
Topping the list is Dhaka, Bangladesh with 119 decibels. Following is Moradabad, India at 114 decibels, Islamabad and Pakistan at 105 decibels.
Fifth is Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Rajshahi City in Bangladesh at 103 decibels.
Bangkok’s ranking might have been caused by “loud traffic, busy markets and roaring motorcycles”, the report continues. However, experts warn these loud sounds have serious consequences.
Prolonged exposure to loud noise is linked to hearing loss, stress and even cardiovascular diseases.
“This ranking serves as a wake-up call for urban planners and policymakers across Asia to prioritise noise management as a key component of public health and city design”, the article concludes.
