BTS Gold line starts construction in April

A new 2.7km project along Charoen Nakorn road is in the works as the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), together with some private sectors including Icon Siam, is in talks with the government for a project of what seems to be the shortest railway extension in the country.

Director and COO of BTS Surapong Laoha-Unya explains that the 2.08-billion-baht project is to connect key stations in the area from BTS Krung Thonburi all the way to Wat Anongkharam.

However, the project has been opposed by Klong San Locals and will be under close scrutiny of the Environmental Impact Evaluation Bureau for its elevated track contravenes existing regulations that prohibit developments that hinder the view of Rattanakosin Island. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), who oversees transportation structures and operations, defends the project and asks for consideration saying the planned elevated track costs cheaper than underground tracks. The BTS has already expressed its intent to construct and operate such project for almost 30 years.
