Education Ministry scraps compulsory scout uniforms

The Education Ministry has greenlit schools to relax the compulsory wearing of full scout uniforms.

In a The Nation report, parents can now breathe easier as this move by the Education Ministry is aimed to lighten the financial burden this upcoming school term. Deputy Education Minister Surasak Phancharoenworrakul announced this decision following a meeting with senior ministry officials on Wednesday, April 23.

He added that the National Scout Organization of Thailand is preparing the final announcement, which is expected this month, exempting schools under the ministry’s jurisdiction from enforcing the traditional scout uniform requirements.

However, schools now have the discretion to determine appropriate dress for scout activities – ceremonial, training and casual, clarified Surasak. Pupils are permitted to wear their school or PE uniforms during scout lessons, or simply wear their scout scarf “as the identifying symbol for participation”, the report continued.

This move is aimed to reduce expenses faced by parents and also to alleviate intolerable weather conditions in the country.
