The Cabinet approved on 28 May 2019, the construction of Ban Phai – Maha Sarakham – Roi Et – Mukdahan – Nakhon Phanom double-track rail project which shall be implemented by the State Railway of Thailand.
This 66.85 billion-project will cover 355 kilometers of railroad and will be constructed for eight years. This is part of the Upper East-West Economic Corridor which is expected to link with the rail network to Laem Chabang Port in the east and with the Border Goods Transport Center Project in Nakhon Phanom. From there, the project will lead to the Lao PDR and Hanoi in Vietnam. To the west, from Mae Sot, the railway will link with the Ports of Yangon and Moumein in Myanmar.
The Double Rail Track Project will pass through 70 sub districts and 19 districts in six provinces: Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi-Et, Yasothon, Mukdahan, and Nakhon Phanom. There will be 30 new stations, one junction, three container depots, and three container yards.
