Thai police can now officially ask for fines from those who are not wearing medical or cloth masks in public places. Beginning June 8, 2021, anyone who is caught not wearing a mask in public places can be fined as follows:
First offense: 1,000 baht.
Second offense: between 1,000 baht to 10,000 baht.
Third offense: between 10,000 baht to 20,000 baht.
This has been announced on Thai government’s official gazette website under the name of Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Minister of Public Health. Mr. Anutin is also the chairman of the National Communicable Disease Committee.
Already before the breakdown of monetary penalties was announced, some cases of individuals paying baht to Thai authorities were reported.
The Thai Prime Minister himself, Prayuth Chan-ocha, was fined 6,000 baht as his first offense for not wearing a mask at a cabinet meeting. Some in the Ayutthaya province were reportedly fined 500 baht but were later increased according to reports.
Wear your mask when in public places. Make it part of your routine. It’s for your benefit and the people surrounding you. Imagine paying 1,000 baht on your first offense, that’s a headache for the day or probably weeks!
