Glass walls inside the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan did not deter suicide attempts or fatal accidents from happening as an Irish man fell to his death on Thursday, March 30.
The Irish was identified as Alan Paul Grimes, 32, who climbed the safety glass wall at the fourth floor (departures floor area) at about 6:25am. He was immediately rushed to nearby Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital but was later pronounced dead at 8:06am.
According to Airport General Manager Sirote Duangratana, airport security were informed at 6:25am that a foreign man plunged from an escalator on the departure floor area to the ground level. Surveillance footage showed that the man made all his way up to the floor, nearing Gate 5 of the airport and then leaped when he had reached the top. The man’s body was found at the first floor near Gate 4.
The Nation reported that the incident is not new at all. On March 12, 2015, a foreigner jumped to his death from a corridor linking the airport’s terminal and car park. In 2014, a Canadian also died at the airport. A source inside the airport said that police officers previously said that as much as 4 foreigners are committing suicide at the airport yearly.
Due to these earlier incidents, Safety Director Kittpong Kittikachorn called for the installation of the 2.5 meter high glass walls in the vicinity of the airport terminal. However, Grimes was able to avoid the walls and jumped to his death.
