The Cabinet, during its meeting on 26 May 2020 approved the extension of the period of emergency situation declaration in all areas of the Kingdom of Thailand for one more month, from 1 to 30 June 2020.
The decision was made following a proposal by the Office of the National Security Council, which serves as the coordinating office of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration. The announcement on the extension was also published in the Royal Gazette on 26 May 2020.
The Cabinet was told that a meeting of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration was of the view that the enforcement of the emergency situation declaration, under the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E. 2548 (2005), was still necessary, as it would help in the management of containing the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Moreover, it would facilitate the unified operations of officials, create the central standards in public health, and help rehabilitate the people more inclusively.
As Thailand is considering the third and fourth stages of its relaxation of disease-control restrictions, the meeting of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration stated that activities in the third and fourth stages could have high risks of the spread of COVID-19. Therefore, it is necessary to operate in a systematic manner and in an appropriate time to contain the virus.
The extension of the period of emergency situation declaration will also enable Thailand to have more time to prepare to cope with the emerging situation in a second wave of the spread of the COVID-19, since the pandemic remains serious in many countries.
