Thailand bids for Wat Arun as UNESCO site

Known for its iconic structure and historical significance, the immaculate ‘Temple of Dawn’ is part of the preliminary list in a bid to be part of UNESCO’s heritage site.

In a The Nation report, the Thai cabinet is backing a proposal for nominating the “Phra Prang of Wat Arun Ratchawararam: Identity of the Rattanakosin Kingdom” for inclusion on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List.

According to Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, the decision followed a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, emphasizing the iconic temple’s architectural significance as a unique representation of the Phra Prang style from the Rattanakosin period within the Asian region.

After this, Thailand will formally submit nomination documents to the World Heritage Centre in Paris before the end of April. The submission will allow the evaluation for the World Heritage Committee meeting which will take place between June and July 2025.

The Ministry of Culture has assigned the Fine Arts Department to work closely with Wat Arun Ratchawararam on preparing “archaeological considerations, the preservation of the ancient monument, and the development of a systematic management plan for the temple grounds.”
