Labor Minister M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul has quit the Cabinet, effective on Monday, July 20 becoming the fifth minister to resign.
Ruam Palang Prachachart Thai Party spokesman, Mr. Khetrat Laothammatat, has confirmed M.R. Chatumongol’s resignation, but said that the party has not yet received his formal resignation letter.
M.R. Chatumongol was reported to be upset by criticism, within the party, indicating that he has under-performed and that the party wants Mr. Anek Laothammatat to replace him.
He reportedly told the Matichon newspaper that he didn’t want to quit “but it is about time for changes”.
Five other ministers have already left the Government, reportedly to ease pressure on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha over an upcoming cabinet reshuffle.
They are Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak, Finance Minister Uttama Savanayana, Energy Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong, Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovations Minister Suwit Mesinsee and PM’s Office Minister Tewan Liptapallop.
