“Celebrate the Extraordinary” is the theme of the 28th SEA Games. Returning after 22 years, Singapore is once again hosting the biggest regional multi-sport event in conjunction with its 50th anniversary celebrations. A lion named ‘Nila’ is chosen as the official mascot for the occasion.
The opening ceremony which is played part by more or less 5,000 performers dazzles 55,000 live viewers at the National Stadium in Kallang. The new sporting venue was constructed last year and in time for this biennial event. The performances for the opening ceremony is organized by the Singapore Armed Forces, which also coordinates the city-state’s annual National Day Parade. It is also supported by an ingenious team with Beatrice Chia-Richmond as the Creative Director.
About 7,000 athletes from 11 participating nations compete in 402 events across 36 sports. According to the organizers, the ticket to watch the opening and closing ceremonies are already sold out. However, sports enthusiasts all over the globe can freely watch all the events live or watch the replay at SingaporeSports YouTube channel.
The Philippines has a delegation of 472 athletes and 136 officials for the 35 sporting events, including the flag-bearer Alyssa Valdez of the Philippine women’s volleyball team.
