Experts warn against eating raw beef anew

Doctors and medical experts give stern reminders to fans of “Soi Ju” (raw minced beef), a popular delicacy in the Isarn provinces, to stop or avoid eating it after a disturbing recent case of beef tapeworm infection.

The Parasitic Disease Research Center and Chairman of FMC Medical Center in Nakhon Ratchasima, Dr. Natkapahat Rattanapithun, has confirmed a case of beef tapeworm infection involving the consumption of raw beef dishes, specifically “soi ju”.

Tapeworms are parasites found in raw meat, specifically in beef and pork products. Once consumed, they can grow inside the host to up to 5-10 meters for beef tapeworms and 2-4 meters for raw pork products. Common symptoms include severe complications like bloating, bile duct obstruction, vomiting and nausea. However in more severe cases, these parasites can emerge through the mouth, nose or even the rectum, Dr. Natkapahat explained.

If you believe you have such a case, you can be treated through an endoscopic removal procedure or deworming medication, depending on the severity of the infestation and its potential side effects.

A video circulating online from the Lan Panda medical page has sparked conversations online on individuals consuming raw meat. “While some people prefer the taste of raw meat dishes, claiming they’re more flavorful, we strongly recommend consuming fully cooked meat instead. If individuals insist on consuming raw meat, they should undergo regular parasite screenings and seek proper medical attention rather than attempting self-treatment”, he added.
