Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha has congratulated Ms. Saowalak Thongkuay, President of the Association to Empower the Potential of Women with Disabilities, on her election to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) for the term 2021-2024.
Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said that Ms. Saowalak is the very first disabled lady to represent Thailand on the global stage. This also reflects the country’s success in its efforts to empower persons with disabilities.
Ms. Saowalak was nominated by Disabilities Thailand as the country’s candidate for CRPD, replacing Mr. Montien Boonton, whose term in CPRD expired on 31 December 2020. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security had worked actively with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the campaign for her candidacy.
Ms. Saowalak was elected one of the new CPRD members among the candidates from 88 countries, at the 13th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on 11 December 2020.
The Prime Minister commended Ms. Saowalak for her determination to work for the empowerment of persons with disabilities and to put forward wide-ranging issues related to persons with disabilities in the UN’s endeavors, especially human rights protection, empowering women with disabilities, non-discrimination against women and children with disabilities, independent living, and participation by persons with disabilities on the basis of equality.
The Prime Minister expressed confidence that Ms. Saowalak would play a significant role in creating awareness of the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities on the global stage.
