Chairman of the subcommittee on the national ID system Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson said that the senate is targeting to pass the bill by early 2018. The passing of the bill would “enhance the delivery of basic services to the public, as well as prevent crimes and expedite transactions in the private sector.” The said senator also said that the Philippines is one of the few countries who has yet to implement a national ID card system. Thailand has one for citizens aged 7 and up.
Lacson also stresses that the current administration is in full support, exclaiming that the previous administrations’ talks always bogged down and would not even reach committee hearings. The government has allotted PHP2 billion to the Philippine Statistics Authority to prepare its rollout.
A House of Representatives version of the national ID system was also approved in September 2017 on its final reading that requires Filipinos 18 years old and above, residing in the country or abroad to register personal data for the said ID. The Senate’s version however is not mandatory.
