Thailand-based Filipino PhD student receives research award in London

Raymund T. Palayon, a Filipino PhD student at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) in Bangkok, received the SACC-TSAC 2019 oral presentation award held at Imperial College London in the United Kingdom.

Palayon is taking up PhD in Applied Linguistics for English Language Teaching Program, School of Liberal Arts at KMUTT. He is a native of Buhangin in Davao City.

The 11th Samaggi Academic Conference and Careers Fair and the 8th Thai Student Academic Conference (SACC-TSAC 2019) is a special event comprising the Academic Conference, the Abstract Competition and the Careers Fair. The event is exclusively organised by Samaggi Samagom, under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, for Thai students and the Thai community studying and living in the UK, according to its website.

SACC-TSAC 2019 is co-hosted by Samaggi Samagom, Royal Thai Embassy in London, Office of Educational Affairs, Office of the Civil Service Commission (OCSC), Office of Science and Technology (OSTC), Royal Thai Embassy in Brussels and Ministry of Science and Technology, Thailand.

In a Facebook post, KMUTT congratulated Palayon for his exemplary performance:

Mr. Raymund T. Palayon, graduate student of PhD in Applied Linguistics for English Language Teaching Program, School of Liberal Arts,KMUTT,was awarded SACC-TSAC 2019 oral presentation award for their research on “Because mass suicide is the way: A keyword analysis of the sermons of destructive cults” from The 11th Samaggi Academic Conference and Careers Fair and the 8th Thai Student Academic Conference (SACC-TSAC 2019), during 15-17 February 2019, Prince of Imperial College London United Kingdom.

Palayon is under the supervision of Prof Dr Richard Watson Todd and Dr Sompatu Vungthong.

While pursuing his doctorate degree, Palayon also works as a lecturer at Muban Chombueng Rajabhat University in Ratchaburi.
