What Does ‘-Porn’ Mean in Thai Names?

As expats in Thailand, we have definitely encountered names that seem “off” to many speakers but for Thai locals, having the final “-porn” suffix is of good meaning.

According to a Bangkok Post article, “-porn” in Thai means blessing, good wishes, or something that has been blessed.

For a name like Somporn, it means “as one wishes”. Warapon means “one who retains good things”. Siwaporn means “blessing of Shiva”. Pattaraporn means “one with a good heart”, and Arapaporn means “one with blessed light”.

To avoid confusion in internal contexts, “-porn” can also be alternatively spelled as “phorn”, “phon”, “pawn”, “bhorn”, or simply “pon”.

The same article also explains that once Thais with intercultural experience explain their names, people from foreign countries generally understand such culture and tradition.
