2nd MERS CoV Case in the Philippines Confirmed

MANILA, Philippines – Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the second case of MERS CoV today July 6, 2015 after a 36-year-old foreigner from Dubai tested positive of the virus.

The patient was referred to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) last Saturday and had been under observation. Also, DOH is monitoring eight people who had close contact with the patient. One of them is also confined at the RITM, while the rest are quarantined at home.

DOH spokesman Lyndon Lee-Suy said, adding contact tracing was now under way to prevent the spread of the disease. His condition was improving and there was no known transmission so far.

The first case reported in the Philippines was in February when a Filipina nurse working in Saudi Arabia was tested positive of the virus. But eventually she recovered from the virus and the 11 individuals who came in close contact with her were also cleared after undergoing quarantine.
