Maya Bay on Phi Phi island was temporarily closed last year due to rise of visitors on the average 5,000 per day which according to the officials caused damage to the environment.
The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation announced the extended closure until mid May of 2021 to give time for the island’s ecology to recover.
According to Kasetsart University marine biologist and member of the national park’s committee Assistant Prof Thon Thamrongnawasawat, “the closure extension was warranted because the department needs to not only protect the environment but also develop more facilities there including a walking board, a dock for tourist boats, toilets, and a residence for officials.”
