Requirements in getting or renewing your Thai driving license

Having some school days off, I decided to renew my two-year driving license at the Land Transportation Office in Nonthaburi. Here are steps I took to have it renewed and got my new five-year professional driving license.

Requirements as written/translated by their staff.

  • Driver’s license
  • Original passport and copy
  • Copy of visa
  • Medical certificate
  • Original work permit and copy

Step 1. Make an appointment by yourself or via DLT Smart Queue. In Nonthaburi, they only have schedules on Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Step 2. Arrive early not later than 8:30 AM on the day of your appointment.

Step 3. Fall in line along with other applicants towards the main doors/entrance where your documents will be checked. If your documents are complete, the staff will give you a number.

Step 4. Submit your documents (either Line 6 or 8).

Step 5. Wait for your name to be called. They will give you a new queue number along with all your documents.

Step 6. Proceed to the Physical Exam room. There are four kinds of vision tests.

Step 7. Pay (I paid 555 baht for my new five-year Thai driver’s license.)

Step 8. Have your photo taken and then wait until it’s printed. And that’s it!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. If you are going to take the Driving Exam (computerized), you have to go to the 3rd floor to attend the training (5 hours full training or 1 hour theory training). After which, a one-hour exam will be conducted.
  2. There are 50 questions and you have to get at least 45 points to pass. If you happen to fail, you will be given one more chance to try. Two chances are given each day. If you fail twice, you have to come back the following working day at 9:00 AM. The staff will give you an appointment stab (white small piece of paper).
