Philippines tops Thailand’s list of skilled workers

Among ASEAN member countries, the Philippines takes the top spot in terms of most number of skilled workers and technicians in Thailand according to Department of Employment Director-General Veranon Peetiwan.

Among the 9 member countries, the top five consisted of the Philippines with 14,830, followed by Malaysia at 2,924. Singapore (2,034), Myanmar (1,948) and Indonesia (1,279) ranked third, fourth and fifth respectively. Out of the 1,380,349 workers coming from ASEAN nations, around 50,000 are believed to be skilled labour and technicians. Jobs taken are in teaching, management, engineering, architecture and business accordingly.

With the rise of figures this year, Director-General Veranon has urged these migrant workers to seek legality in working in the Kingdom by following the right procedures set by the Department of Employment.

In a report of Bangkok Post, the National Reform Steering Assembly will propose a new resolution to fight against illegal labour and human trafficking. In the said proposal, registration of migrant workers at border checkpoints should be open all year round. It continues to recommend on capping the registration fee to 5,600THB in order to attract workers.

This initiative will provide convenience for all, especially for neighbouring countries. At present, migrant workers register at different times and certain groups are discouraged from registering. Periodical registration has forced many migrant workers to take a job even if it pays low, hence ending in exploitation.
